Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) In Indian Noses - How Different Is It From Western ( Caucasian) Noses?
Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as nose job, is a procedure
which changes shape and size of the nose. It is more frequently done as a
cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of nose It can also be done either
to repair any post injury nasal defect or to correct certain functional
problems or breathing difficulty.
The goals of rhinoplasty in Indian patients are similar to
the goals of rhinoplasty in people of other ethnic origin. The ultimate goal is
to enhance the shape and size of nose in proportionate to other facial features
so that it fits harmoniously with your face.
A good rhinoplasty is always subtle and looks natural. It
should enhance the appearance of nose while preserving individual’s ethnic and
cultural heritage. Also the nose has to be in balance with overall face,
forehead and chin. Sometimes an additional procedure like chin augmentation
needs to be done to achieve better facial balance.
Rhinoplasty in Indian patients is quite different from western
or Caucasian patients. There are several things to consider while doing
rhinoplasty in Indian noses.
1.
Indian noses are wider and shorter.
2.
The skeletal ( bone and cartilage) framework of
Indian noses is weak and majority of the bulk is due to thick skin and bulky
soft tissue.
3.
For correction of drooping or under projecting
nasal tip one has to change underlying
bone and cartilage more deliberately so the result will show through thick skin
and bulky soft tissue.
4.
On other hand, weak and delicate bones and
cartilages demand additional support. That means augmentation rhinoplasty is
more common than reduction rhinoplasty like in Caucasians.
5.
In augmentation rhinoplasty additional cartilage
grafts ( from ear or rib cage), bone
grafts or some artificial material like
silicone implants are used for better projection and definition of nasal tip
and dorsum.
6.
Since skeletal framework demands more definitive
changes open rhinoplasty is more preferred in Indians than closed rhinoplasty.
